I have a utility room (think 3 foot square cupboard off kitchen!) which is in dire need of a rehaul too. The desk and drawers you have are a fantastic start, nice and sturdy and plenty of storage space. I would suggest hanging some kind of curtain/fabric panel around the base of the desk, then you can hide a whole load of stuff under there, even the laundry basket. This will free up the top of the desk for more neat storage. Would be fast and minimal sewing. My laundry area is thankfully in the basement but it's a someday project to get it all organized and (dare I say?) make it an enjoyable space to complete some unenjoyable chores.
